Viking netters defeat Comets with adjusted line-up

In their second home meet of the season, the Decorah girls tennis team defeated Charles City Tuesday, April 11, 8-1.  The varsity lineup was moderately adjusted to provide match play opportunities for the less experienced varsity members and up-and-coming JV players in both singles and doubles, and the Decorah athletes stepped up to the challenge.
In singles, Evon Leitz slid seamlessly into the No. 1 position, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-3; likewise, freshman Olivia Huinker moved into the No. 2 singles spot smoothly, winning 6-4, 6-2.  With steady groundstrokes, Camryn Holland defeated her opponent at No. 3 singles; senior Jenna Hartz battled at No. 4 singles, winning her first set in a tie break but ultimately falling in a third-set tie-breaker.  Newcomers Klaara Short at No. 5 singles and Mara Branum at No. 6 singles didn’t back down in the face of tough competition with both winning tight matches.

Strong start for SW linksters

It was a solid two-day period for the South Winn golf teams, as the boys’ squad hit the links for the first time Monday at Waukon and both teams were in action Tuesday at Big Rock Golf Course in Fayette Tuesday in an 18-hole triangular.

Boys only
The South Winn boys golf team competed in a nine-hole triangular event at Waukon Golf & Country Club against Waukon and Crestwood on Monday, April 11, finishing third. Waukon came out victorious with 160 followed by Crestwood with 166 and South Winn with a 171.
Senior Carson Wenthold made some noise in the first outing of the season, finishing third with a 38. Also contributing to the Warrior scorecard were Jackson Goltz, 42; Carson Streeter, 44, Braiden Todd, 47, Jordan Baumler, 48; and Brady Lensing, 53.

Trojans bring home several golds from N-P

It was a busy night on the oval for the Turkey Valley track teams Tuesday as the Trojans competed at Nashua-Plainfield, bringing home a total of five gold medals.
At the end of the night, Northwood-Kensett took the girls’ team title with 112 points with Turkey Valley bringing home sixth with 58 points. In the boys’ team race, it was the host, Nashua-Plainfield, reigning supreme with 161 points and the Trojans finishing with 49 points in seventh place.

Decorah girls take bronze at Top Gun

On the most beautiful weekend of spring, Decorah traveled to Waterloo’s Byrnes Park on Saturday, April 8, to compete in the Top Gun tennis tournament. Hosted by Columbus Catholic, this tournament presented the Decorah team with some of the toughest competition they will encounter until the latter part of the season. Each girl played a total of 78 games of tennis, and undoubtedly each would say the day’s competition improved their game.

New opponent for Vikes

The Decorah boys tennis team hosted a top 1A Minnesota team from Saint Paul Area, Mounds Park Academy Saturday, April 8. Mounds Park brought a tough style of play from an experienced team and beat Decorah 9-2.

Errors costly for Lady Vikes

It was a very even game between the Decorah girls soccer team and Dubuque Senior Saturday, April 8. Playing on the road, the Vikes were unable to find the goal and were defeated 2-0.

SW will mix veteran talent with exciting youth

Talent and experience will rule the course for the South Winn girls’ golf team in 2023.
The Warriors return four letter winners who were able to contribute low scores for the team a year ago.
They will be coached by Glenna Munuswamy, who is in her fifth year leading the women.

Finding the right line-up may be a challenge for the South Winn boys’ golf team, with a mix of experience and first-time players looking to contribute to the Warriors’ success this season.
Looking to put together a solid squad come postseason in May, is seventh-year head coach Mike Wenthold.

Winners of the oval; Vikes win own invite

The Decorah girls’ track and field team hosted the Viking Invite Thursday night, featuring eight teams from across the area.
The Vikings won the meet with 174 points, South Winn took home fifth with 65 points, while Turkey Valley was eighth with 26 points.

Warriors second, TV boys fifth at Postville

Getting out on a nice night for a meet, the South Winn and Turkey Valley boys’ track teams competed at the Postville Foster Kiesau Relays Thursday night.
The Warriors finished the meet with 103 points, taking the runner-up spot in the team standings behind Waukon who tallied 165 points. The Trojans were fifth with 69 points.
