Swimmers kick off season

The Decorah girls’ swim and dive season kicked off Thursday with a dual at Mason City in a close race with the Riverhawks. Then the Vikes dove into the water against some stiff competition at the Ram Relays hosted by Dubuque Hempstead Saturday, finishing seventh.

Abundance of experience as TV will rely on seven letter winners

After tying for the Upper Iowa Conference title last season, the Turkey Valley volleyball team is looking to remain at the top of its game and make some noise in the postseason in 2023.
Pushing the girls to accomplish their goals are head coach Shelbie Balk who is in her second season with the Trojans. At her side is assistant Ashley Walz.

The South Winn Warriors (0-2, 0-0 UIC) opened up the volleyball season on Thursday evening at the Dunkerton triangular with Hudson and Dunkerton.

The 2023 football season can’t start soon enough for the Decorah squad.
A year removed from missing the playoffs, this year’s edition of the team is eager to prove that last year was a fluke.
Overseeing a team hungry to reach the Dome is Head Coach Pat Trewin, who is entering his sixth season as the skipper, his 32nd with the football program.

Warriors to be led by experience, strength and speed

After a difficult 2022 season where injuries plagued the South Winn football team, the Warriors are ready to spring into action.
Entering his 17th season at the controls, Head Coach Jason Ohrt has put together a 105-60 record with the Warriors. At his side will be assistants Mike Wenthold, Justin Izer and Carter Wenthold.

Trojans excited for 2023 season

The Turkey Valley football team is once again ready to make some commotion on the gridiron after wrapping up a district title in 2022 and finishing with 7-2 overall.
Overseeing the team, hungry to return to the playoffs is Head Coach Mark Scott who is entering his 21st year as head coach of the Trojans. He will be assisted by Dan Stepan, Alvin Hackman and volunteer coach Frank Wilson.

Decorah swimmers ready to make a splash in 2023

A time to rebuild.
The Decorah girls swim and dive team graduated a large group of seniors — 14 to be exact. Of those, the five state qualifiers have all graduated, leaving second-year head coach Loran Storts and assistant coach Maddy Putnam looking at the letter winners and newcomers to step up.

SW netters eager to showcase talents

Competition will be tough for the South Winn volleyball team this season as the Warriors work to put a line-up back together after graduating nine seniors.
Despite the loss, fifth-year Head Coach Alex Smith has six returning letter winners and several other athletes vying for a starting nod.
“We have a lot of excitement within our program and a lot of depth to work with having 36 players out for volleyball in grades 9-12,” said Coach Smith. “We should have a number of options to consider at all positions in the varsity line-up, and we have great competition amongst our players in practice.”

Another year of experience for Warrior harriers

Having seen sweet success the last few years with the girls team, the Warrior cross country squads are looking to remain the teams to beat in the area.
With seven total seniors, the Warriors have a strong core of harriers back, aiming for a conference title, despite losing some of its best runners to graduation.
Leading the way are the co-coaches Kevin Kearney and Scott Conway. Kearney has been with the team for 30 years while Conway has been with the squad for 30.

Warriors face North Linn in substate Tuesday

The South Winn baseball team (22-11) had a lot on the line last week as the Warriors look to make their second straight state tournament appearance and the fourth since 2019. There is just one team standing in their way — sixth-ranked North Linn (26-4), a team the Warriors will face in a substate game Tuesday, July 11, in Waverly at 7 p.m.
