Trojans have plenty of firepower to reload out on gridiron

Turkey Valley has some holes to fill – no doubt about it.

But if there’s one thing that Mark Scott’s gridiron squads have proven over the years – his Trojans have no problem reloading, because the term “rebuild” rarely applies to his tradition-rich program.

Tammy Vrzak is back for more and she hopes to keep piling up the victories for her Turkey Valley Trojan spikers this fall.

Vrzak will begin her 24th season as coach of her Upper Iowa Conference volleyball squad in 2024 and she’ll have a little help in that department as well. Ashley Walz will also return as co-head coach this year. The tandem of Vrzak and Walz took over for second-year Trojan head coach Shelbie Balk midway through the ’23 campaign.

Quality is definitely there for the Turkey Valley cross country team this year; after all two-thirds of the Trojans’ runners were all-conference runners a year ago.

Quantity, on the other hand, not so much.

Ten years ago, the South Winn baseball team made their debut at the state tournament in Class 2A. Now the Warriors have earned their seventh state berth, the fifth in the last six years after defeating Kee Saturday in the district final and Don Bosco in the substate game Tuesday night.

Vikes’ playoff foiled by Independence

An early deficit proved to be too much for the Decorah baseball team Friday as the Vikes hosted Independence (14-20) in the Class 3A Substate 3 quarterfinals. It was the second meeting for the two squads this season on Olejniczak field with the Mustangs taking this one as well, 7-5.
Decorah ends the season 22-15.

Decorah softball ends season with Comets

The season came to an end for the Decorah softball team Thursday night in the first round of the Class 4A regional playoffs.
The Vikings tangled with Charles City, falling 10-2. Decorah ends the year 10-18 overall and graduates just one senior — Sydney Kipp.

SW falls in Warriors versus Warriors battle

Avenging last year’s regional semifinal game and a contest earlier this season against South Winn, Wapsie Valley pushed the Red and White out of the postseason Wednesday in the Class 2A Region 7 Semifinal, 9-3.
South Winn ended the season with a 22-13 overall mark as the Upper Iowa Conference champions for the second straight year.

Three Lady Vikes named All-NEIC

Three members of the Decorah softball team were honored by the Northeast Iowa Conference recently by being named all-conference.
Elizabeth Bucksa, Lauren Luzum and Clara Hjelle all earned first team honors.
