Trojans take two at Crestwood

Monday, September 13, 2021 2:00 pm

The Turkey Valley volleyball team (3-6) took to the court at the Crestwood tournament Saturday, coming home with two wins.
“We need to get our offense running a bit stronger and the girls need to get a little more intensity in their play the whole time they are on the court and off. When we saw them with that intensity, they played great, when the intensity was low we tended to play flat,” said Coach Tammy Vrzak. “They are starting to gel together much better the more we get to play. This will be a long week with no matches but look forward to playing next weekend.”

Saturday, the Warriors were at the five-team round robin tournament at Jesup and picked up its first three victories of the season, finishing third.
“This was a fun day for us getting to play a lot of volleyball and getting some consistency in areas we had struggled with. Getting to play two conference opponents in advance of conference play also was a nice way to get a preview of what we will see down the road. Picking up the third set victory over Elkader was also nice momentum for us as we had dropped a couple of deciding sets earlier in the season,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Vikings fare well at Dick Pollitt Invite

Wednesday, September 8, 2021 4:56 pm

It was a successful night on the course for the Decorah boys’ and girls’ cross country teams as the Vikings took part in the Dick Pollitt Go-Hawk Classic Tuesday night.
The Classic is different from other cross country meets. Each high school squad is divided into grades and then race against runners only at their age level. To form an overall team score, the squad’s top-five harriers, with no more than two representatives from each grade level, are combined for a cumulative score. Individual grade level races are scored by each team’s top-three runners.

For the first time in school history the Turkey Valley football team (2-0) defeated Don Bosco (0-2), surviving in double overtime, 48-42, on the road.
“This was a back-and-forth game with big plays by both teams. Offensively we did a great job of mixing up the run pass to keep the defense honest. Marcus Herold did a great job of power running as the game progressed,” said Coach Mark Scott.

The South Winn football team (1-1) countered the week one loss with a win Friday night on the road over Maquoketa Valley, 19-0.
Friday night, the Warriors produced 458 yards while holding the Wildcats to 82.

Coach Loren Straube orchestrated yet another shut out to go on his long resume. Our kids are so lucky to have his leadership. No assistant coach works harder.”
