After a week off of the competition court, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (6-7) battled at the Waukon tournament Saturday, finishing the day with a 3-1 record.
“The girls had a great weekend they really came together with fire under their belts. It was nice to see them bring to the court what we needed to tweak from last weekend. Josie (Weber) did a good job of utilizing all hitters and our back row played a stellar defensive game to give us great rallies. Brianna (Busta) stepped up her middle position and really showed what she can do. It’s fun to see the girls work together as a team and be able to complement each other during play,” said Coach Tammy Vrzak.

“For whatever reason we were not ready when the match started and our play in set one demonstrated that. Once we settled down a little we were able to compete with Waverly-Shell Rock,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “We passed fairly well but just couldn’t find the floor at times with our swings. As we’ve been saying all year, we know there are things that we need to continue to work on and a good team like Waverly-Shell Rock is going to identify those very quickly and capitalize on them. As we stated last night after the match, if we learn from the experience we will continue to grow and get better as a team. Independence on Thursday is going to be another tough match for us, and we need to be able to bounce back and be ready.”

A huge rushing game propelled the Turkey Valley football team (3-0, 1-0) to a 60-12 victory over Rockford (1-2, 1-1) Friday night in Rockford.
The Trojans picked up 405 yards rushing on the night.
“We played very well with the Trojan offensive and defensive lines controlling the line of scrimmage all night. The offensive interior line of Collin Kleppe, Treyton Hulbert and Austin Kuehner let our backs get five yards untouched all game long. The running backs (Marcus Herold, Dylan Reicks and Carson Busta) then added tough yards after contact,” said Coach Mark Scott. “We did not throw much but when we did Noah executed the passes well going 4-for-5 with three touchdowns.”

Vikings stumble at WD 42-21
Monday, September 13, 2021 2:02 pm
A flurry of points in the final period swung the momentum to West Delaware as the Hawk football team (2-1) defeated Decorah (1-2, 0-0) in Manchester Friday night, 42-21.
“West Delaware is a deep and big team. We played very hard and the score got away from us at the end. It was a competitive ball game, and we made some very good plays, but we had a few too many mistakes to win against a good team. We believe we got better playing this game and learned more about what we can do,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We will come out very determined to improve in our blocking and steadier in our passing game. We had players learn a new position in a week and they did an admirable job. We are proud of our physical effort. We can still communicate better, and make better decisions.”
