Living up to the hype; Trojans trounce Janesville

Monday, September 27, 2021 1:35 pm

In a battle of the Class 8-man District 3 battle of the undefeated teams, the Turkey Valley football team (5-0, 3-0) withstood the test Friday night, defeating Janesville (4-1, 3-1) 28-20.
“We played well on both sides of the ball. On offense we ran the ball well again and threw enough to keep their defense honest until late in the game,” said Coach Mark Scott. “On defense we held them in check most of the game. One of their touchdowns came on 4th down and the pass was tipped away but fell into one of their other receiver’s hands. This was a big road win.”

Happy homecoming for Vikes with 33-14 victory

Monday, September 27, 2021 1:34 pm

Everything was clicking for the Decorah football team (3-2, 1-0) as the Vikings put together a solid effort in the 33-14 homecoming victory over Mason City (1-4, 0-1) Friday night.
“We played well in each phase of the game. It was not perfect, but very good. Our blocking in the run game showed progress and each player that had the chance ran hard. Our defense had to get more stops than we wanted because we did not possess the ball as much as we wanted in the second half. Keenan Tyler had a big game from both the running and passing standpoint and our line was physical on both sides of the football. Yet it was as a team we were able to execute each phase fairly well. We need to keep improving to win the upcoming big games,” said Coach Pat Trewin.

Wagner wins Anamosa title; Kruckman fifth

Monday, September 27, 2021 1:31 pm

It was a busy course Saturday morning in Anamosa as the South Winn cross country teams competed at the Anamosa Invite.
During the meet, numerous Warriors posted times that were season and lifetime bests.
“We challenged the groups to focus on racing and not worrying about times or places. This was one of the best overall team efforts I’ve seen as a coach. To put it in perspective, our girls improved on average by 30 seconds, almost 10 seconds per mile. As a team, they ran four minutes faster as a team then their previous season best times. The boys averaged a 46 second improvement, 15 seconds per mile. As a team, they improved by almost seven minutes from their previous lifetime bests,” said Coach Scott Conway.

Warriors fall to district leader North Linn

Monday, September 27, 2021 1:24 pm

It’s going to be a tough road for the South Winn football team (2-3, 2-2) to win a district title after falling to North Linn (5-0, 4-0) Friday on the road 20-6.
North Linn is in the driver’s seat for the district title while South Winn sits third in the district with three games remaining in the regular season.
“We felt like we had the momentum going into the second half and started it with an eight-minute drive on offense.  We just didn’t finish that drive and come up with points,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Our kids played a very physical game against the top team in the district. We were able to hang in with their big play offense with a quality rushing attack. Parker Timp had to step in due to an injury and played very well at the running back position.”
