Regional swimming this week

The Decorah girls swim and dive team will compete at the Dubuque Hempstead regional this week.
The regional diving competition, which also will be held at Dubuque Hempstead, is Thursday, Nov. 4, at 6 p.m. The champion from each regional site (a total of six), plus the next highest scoring 24 divers qualify for the state meet.
The swimming competition is Saturday, Nov. 6, at 12 p.m.
Tough final week of Pigskin Picks

With so many upsets happening in Iowa high school football, the final week of the Pigskin Picks football contest was up for grabs.
The fewest missed games were four by David Kamm and Doreen Holstad, both of Decorah. Kamm came out first with a tie-breaker that was seven away from Central’s 76 points.
Mission accomplished as Warriors win title; Blazek, Wagner, Kruckman all medal

The South Winn girls’ cross country team celebrated a victory Saturday as the Warriors claimed the Class 1A title at the state meet in Fort Dodge.
The Warriors, first made the deck in 2015 as a combined squad with Turkey Valley in Class 2A. Last year, South Winn was squeezed out of the top spot by two points and were not to be denied again this year. In addition, Billie Wagner earned her third individual medal of her high school career by placing in the top-15.
South Winn also sent senior Isaiah Kruckman as an individual to compete in Class 1A and saw him reach the deck.
For the fourth year in a row, Jalyssa Blazek not only represented Turkey Valley, but also made the deck. The Trojans also sent senior Cambree Kruse as an individual in Class 1A.
Vikes strike late; defeat No. 1 North Scott

A 50-yard drive, spearheaded by the interception by senior Joseph Bockman, was the spark the Decorah offense needed as the Decorah football team (7-3) defeated Class 4A No. 1 North Scott (9-1) Friday night on the road, 14-10.
Trailing 10-7 late into the fourth quarter, the Vikings scored the winning touchdown with 26 seconds remaining.
Turkey Valley gridders fall 42-40 to Kee

It was a big game full of big plays.
Unfortunately, eight-man Kee (9-1) made more Friday night in Jackson Junction, handing Turkey Valley (9-1) its first loss of the season and knocking the Trojans out of the postseason. Kee advances to the round of 16 and will travel to Easton Valley Thursday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m.
To the max; Vikings battle Western Dubuque in finals

The Decorah volleyball team battled Western Dubuque Tuesday night in the Class 4A regional final.
In the end, it was the top-ranked Bobcats that pulled out the victory, defeating the Vikings 3-0. Set scores were 18-25, 21-25 and 19-25.
“I love this group of girls and I absolutely cannot say enough positive about their effort last night. The atmosphere in that gym was something that we have not been exposed to very often and our girls held their composure, competed and challenged a very good Western Dubuque team until the very end,” said Coach Gina Holthaus.
Nine locals selected all-UIC

Nine local athletes were named to the Upper Iowa Conference volleyball list, released earlier this week.
South Winn placed four athletes on the list while Turkey Valley had five.
Luhman wins adjusted week six

Week six brought interesting results for the weekly pigskin picks football contest.
Decorah’s David Luhman was the champion, not missing a single game.
Trojans bust out 54-14 first round victory

It didn’t faze the Turkey Valley football team (9-0) when Springville (4-5) broke loose for a 53-yard pass play to score on the second play of the game Friday. Instead, the Trojans showed the Orioles they could score too, and often, leading to the 54-14 first-round playoff win.
Decorah gets chance at North Scott

Despite a strong effort, Waverly-Shell Rock Go-Hawks (8-1) were too tough for the Decorah football team (6-3) Friday night, defeating the Vikings 26-7 in the regular season finale and battle for the district championship.
The Vikings finished second in the district and a bid to the postseason. Decorah travels to North Scott (9-0) in the first round Friday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m.
