The South Winn wrestling team picked up a couple of big non-conference wins Tuesday night, defeating Anamosa 43-36 and East Buchanan 44-33.

The Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (3-2, 2-2 UIC) picked up its third win of the season Tuesday night, defeating Central Elkader (1-5, 1-3 UIC) at home, 65-44.

TV girls run out of steam

The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (3-2, 2-2 UIC) dropped its second UIC contest Tuesday night, falling to Central Elkader (6-1, 5-0 UIC) at home, 52-39.

Luther College names Joe Troche Head Football Coach

Renae Hartl, Luther College director of intercollegiate athletics, has named Joe Troche (Tro-Shay) as head coach of football. Troche will immediately assume his duties at Luther.

Luther College’s Fjelstul named GTDSA winner for 2021

Scott Fjelstul, Luther College men’s golf coach, has been named this year’s George Turner Distinguished Service Award recipient for his years of service to the game of golf. He will be recognized during a ceremony at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines Friday, Dec. 17.

Timp champion heavyweight for SW

The mats were busy Saturday as the South Winn wrestling team hosted the South Winn Invite.
Featuring eight teams from northeast Iowa, West Delaware came out on top, taking first with 249.5 points. Osage was a close second with 225 points. South Winn claimed fifth place with 98 points, while Decorah ended the day sixth with 91 points.

Decorah boys have five in double digits

A strong effort on the defensive end of the court propelled the Decorah boys’ basketball team (2-1, 0-0 NEIC) to a big victory over Wapsie Valley in the Winter Classic held at Upper Iowa University in Fayette Saturday. After a close first quarter, the Vikings ran away with the 67-44 win.

Weather forces cancellations

Here is the run-down of events that were cancelled over the weekend and when the make-up dates are:
• The Decorah girls’ and boys’ basketball versus Charles City was postponed. The boys will take the court as hosts to the Comets Tuesday, Jan. 4, while the girls won’t see each other in action in Decorah until Saturday, Jan. 29.
• The Decorah bowling teams will now face Oelwein Tuesday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m., at Skyline Lanes in Decorah.
• The Turkey Valley girls’ and boys’ basketball games at Kee from Friday are now Thursday, Feb. 3. 

 

Viking defense steps up

After Friday’s game was postponed due to weather concerns, the Decorah girls’ basketball team was back on the court Saturday night versus Saint Charles in the Border Battle, winning 73-36.

Vikes drop NEIC dual to Chickasaws

Getting to see the first conference action of the year, the Decorah wrestling team hosted New Hampton Thursday, Dec. 9. At the end of the night, the Vikes fell to the Chickasaws 72-43.
