Lady Vikes best Osage in opener

The Decorah girls’ tennis team survived its first challenge of the season Monday, April 4, as the Vikes hosted Osage for the 9-0 dual win. Tuesday’s match versus Oelwein was postponed until Tuesday, April 11, due to inclement weather.
“With recent weather conditions not allowing for much court practice in the season, the players were apprehensive and tight. Once the girls began to trust their strokes, they gained the upper hand quickly,” said Coach Larry Berland.

Decorah, SW athletes shine at Decorah Early Bird

Cool temperatures and winds couldn’t stop the Decorah early bird track meet Monday night as six area teams got the outdoor season underway.
The host Vikings finished second with 119 points. South Winn came in sixth with 27 points.
In total, the two teams combined for seven gold medals.

SW collects four golds at Jesup

Traveling to Jesup Tuesday night, the South Winn girls’ track and field got their first taste of an outdoor meet, finishing third with 77 points. North Linn claimed the team title with 142 points, followed by Wapsie Valley who garnered 102 points.

Decorah defense holds strong in soccer opener

The Decorah girls’ varsity soccer team (1-0) started the season with a win over Clayton Ridge (0-1). Weather threatened to cut the game short, but it held off Tuesday afternoon so that the Lady Vikes could take the home victory, 1-0, over the Eagles.

Viking girls edge out competition

By a narrow four-point margin, the Decorah girls’ track and field team managed to best the quality field at the Patrick J. Murphy Invitational held at Dubuque Senior Tuesday night. The Vikings secured 104 points during the night, ahead of Dubuque Hempstead’s 100.
“We were happy to have the opportunity to compete last night. The weather wasn’t great, but we were happy with the night,” said co-coaches Cristy Nimrod and Brad Johansen.

Mid-field finish for TV boys at Ed-Co invite

Under less than ideal conditions, the Turkey Valley boys’ track and field team competed at the Ed-Co Invite Tuesday, finishing ninth in the team standings with 36 points. Jesup ran away with the team crown with 126 points over Independence who secured 92 points.

Viking netters will call upon the knowledge of letter winners

The Decorah girls’ tennis team could surprise a few people this season as it looks to retain the conference title and send multiple athletes back to state.
The Vikings returned nine letter winners and have a host of athletes hungry to get a turn on the court.
Excited to get the season started is head coach Larry Berland, who has been at the helm for 45 seasons. Joining him courtside are assistants Reg Laursen, Kristy Shilling and Phil Yee.

Vikes receive signature basketballs

The Iowa Farm Bureau became the exclusive title sponsor of the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) in 2002. On behalf of the Iowa Farm Bureau members across the state, Winneshiek County Farm Bureau agents Nick Wilz, Christina Bruess and Agency manager Mike Wold presented the Decorah Vikings basketball team and coaching staff with commemorative signature basketballs on Monday, March 28.  

Decorah boys start season with victory

The Decorah boys’ tennis team traveled to Winona Senior Friday for their first dual meet of the year.  Playing under Minnesota rules where you only play singles or doubles, the expanded varsity roster of 10 showed their depth winning the meet 5-2.  

Warriors eyeing big season on the greens

It will be a mix of veterans and newcomers that tees off for the South Winn boys’ golf team this spring.
With three letter winners back from last year and a solid team of other athletes ready to crack the varsity line-up, the Warriors could finish near the top of the Upper Iowa Conference in 2022.
Leading the way are Michael Wenthold and Glenna Munuswamy.
