Girls’ tennis advance to state team tourney

Saturday’s match between the Decorah girls’ tennis team and Aplington-Parkersburg in team tournament action ranks as one of the top five matches that Larry Berland has watched in his 45 years of coaching. 
With the Viking’s No. 1 player unable to play, everyone in the single’s lineup had to step up one level with Paige Lange stepping into the vacated No. 6 singles position.

Vikings advance to semis

It was another bench-clearing game for the Decorah boys’ soccer team as the Vikings (13-3) defeated West Delaware (1-15) at home Thursday, 10-0, to advance to the substate semifinal. It marks the Vikes 10th shutout of the year.
The Vikes battled Center Point-Urbana (7-7-1) Monday, May 23, with the winner facing the winner of Marion (14-1) and Maquoketa (3-11-1) Wednesday May 24, at Marion, with game time at 5 p.m.

Boys’ state bid comes up short

The Decorah boys’ tennis team traveled to Waverly-Shell Rock for state team tennis competition.  
Decorah, a district champion, played Marion, a district runner-up in the morning in round of 16 action. With the stakes growing Decorah played inspired tennis and prevailed 5-0, with matches are suspended as soon as one team gets 5 wins.

TV’s Franzen closes out career

Viking girls miss chances to win in postseason

up for grabs in Class 2A Region 6 postseason action, the Decorah girls’ soccer team couldn’t put the ball into goal when it needed to, dropping the contest to Marion, 1-0.
The Vikings end the season with a 5-13 record. Marion (6-9) advances to the regional semifinal versus Waverly-Shell Rock (14-1) Tuesday, May 24, in Waverly at 6 p.m.

Warriors ready to win fifth UIC title

The Warrior Baseball program will look for another successful campaign in the 2022 season, seeking a fifth straight Upper Iowa Conference title and another playoff run. Last year, the Warriors shared the UIC crown with Kee High and lost to Kee in the district final. Kee High went on to finish second in the state tournament.

Schmitt, Klimesh see season end

The season ended for Turkey Valley’s Oliver Schmitt and South Winn’s Shaun Klimesh.
The Upper Iowa Conference pair competed at the Class 1A District meet at Pheasant Ridge in Cedar Falls, hosted by East Buchanan.
The top two teams and top four individuals from each district advanced to the state meet.
