Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:19 pm
The South Winn volleyball team (2-9, 0-0 UIC) captured their first two wins on the season on Saturday at the Jesup tournament. In a busy day of action, the Warriors defeated Alburnett (2-14) and West Central (2-4).
In the first match of the day, the Warriors picked up a first set win against the eventual tournament champion, Jesup (5-6), but the J-Hawks rallied to win the final two sets to win 2-1. Set scores were 21-18, 11-21 and 11-15.
The Warriors went on to win their next two matches before losing to Central Elkader (6-15) and North Linn (10-4) to finish the day. South Winn defeated Alburnett by sets of 21-18, 19-21 and 15-10 and West Central in two sets, 24-22 and 22-20. Facing Upper Iowa Conference foe Central Elkader, South Winn dropped the match by sets of 14-21 and 6-21, with the day ending with North Linn 8-21 and 15-21.
Unstoppable; Warriors pound Eagles 53-19
Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:16 pm
It was raining touchdowns in Guttenberg Friday night as the South Winn football team (1-2, 1-1) crushed Clayton Ridge (1-2, 0-1), 53-19.
The Warriors scored 32 points in the first quarter alone en route to their first victory this season.
“The coaching staff made some adjustments this week and the players responded well. We played our best game to this point on offense, defense and special teams,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Keagen Streeter, Brady Ohrt and Parker Timp all ran the ball very well and our offensive line had their best night led by Jordan Baumler, Carlos Macario and Landon Garcia. Assistant coaches Payton Haynes and Mike Wenthold put together a solid game plan that the kids worked really hard on in practice this week.”
Area athletes run through rain and mud in All-American Saturday
Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:15 pm
It was far from the perfect day for a cross country meet Saturday as Luther College played host to the All-American cross country meet. The event featured teams from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin, competing in middle school, junior varsity, varsity and collegiate courses. Locally, Decorah, South Winn and Turkey Valley all competed.
No. 4 Vikes take down Indee for first time
Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:12 pm
The Vikings proved how much tenacity they have as the Decorah volleyball team (10-1, 1-0 NEIC) defeated Independence (6-7) for the first time in school history at home Thursday, 3-1. Set scores were 25-17, 25-18, 24-26 and 25-12.
“We passed the ball very well against Independence which allowed our setters to move the ball around. We had a lot of good things happen but still have some things to tighten up,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “We are looking forward to traveling to Waverly on Tuesday.”
Hawks speed overwhelms Decorah gridders
Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:10 pm
Coming off a big win over Waukon a week ago, the Decorah football team (1-2) were hoping to keep rolling in non-district action as it hosted West Delaware Friday night. However, the speed of the Hawks proved to be a challenge as the visitors scored in each quarter for the 42-6 win.
“West Delaware is a big and talented team. Their play and physicality were excellent,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We did not play our best. They mixed some things up within both their defensive and offensive schemes and we did not adjust well. We plan to learn from this and work hard to improve.”
Trojans fall on hard times
Wednesday, September 14, 2022 3:09 pm
It was a rough day on the court as the Turkey Valley volleyball team (1-4) fell in four matches at the Kepros Invite hosted by Crestwood Saturday.
The day began versus Crestwood (4-5) where the Trojans lost 12-21 and 18-21. Facing Class 2A No. 6 Lisbon (14-1) were unable to get the momentum going, ultimately losing 8-21 and 11-21. Next up was Waukon (8-5) where the Red and White fell in two sets, 17-21 and 7-21.
First half scoring gives Vikes edge over Waukon
Thursday, September 8, 2022 4:10 pm
Four touchdowns in the first half was just enough for the Decorah football team (1-1) to escape with a 27-24 win over Waukon (0-2) on the road Friday night.
“We are proud of the way our team came out to play and how they competed for the whole game. We still have many areas to improve in and we can still play more physically,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “We had a few penalties and turnovers that could have cost us, and we need to make sure we execute our assignment correctly. However, it was great progress from game one to game two.”
Dons limit Trojans offense
Thursday, September 8, 2022 4:08 pm
The Turkey Valley football team (1-1, 0-0) simply couldn’t keep the ball moving down the field against Don Bosco (2-0, 0-0) Friday night at home, falling 48-8.
“Don Bosco dominated the game on both sides of the ball, and we struggled to get any offense going to move the ball. The defense was on the field most of the night,” said Coach Mark Scott. “I hope we learned what it takes to play at the level we need to play at to make a run in the postseason.”
Mistakes costly in Warrior loss to Maq. Valley
Thursday, September 8, 2022 4:07 pm
Friday night it was clear that Maquoketa Valley was the better team as the South Winn football team (0-2, 0-1) hosted the Wildcats (2-0, 1-0) in a district contest.
“We had a few mistakes on both sides of the ball to put us down 12-0 at the half. Maquoketa Valley blocked and tackled well all night and they have a special talent at the tailback position,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “Despite the loss we had some bright spots. Kyle Kuboushek was very impressive transitioning this week to the defensive line. Parker Timp played well defensively despite dealing with a lower back injury and Keagen Streeter ran hard on offense and tackled well on defense.”

It came down to the wire last week as the fourth-ranked Decorah volleyball team (8-1, 1-0 NEIC) went out of state to take on Caledonia before opening the conference season with a win over Crestwood Tuesday night at home.
