SW still in hunt for UIC crown

Friday, October 14, 2022 1:18 pm

Despite needing five sets, South Winn (10-17, 6-1 UIC) secured the conference win over Central Elkader (11-23, 4-4 UIC) Tuesday to remain in contention for the top UIC spot.
The Warriors were familiar with Central having seen them twice at tournaments this season, dropping both of those matches. Tuesday night was a different story, as South Winn rebounded from an opening set loss, 21-25, to capture the next two sets by 25-19 scores. Central didn’t go away though forcing a fifth set (21-25) and in what was a back-and-forth affair, South Winn came away with some big plays down the stretch to close out the match, 15-12.

Trojans secure district title with OT win over Tripoli

Tuesday, October 11, 2022 3:47 pm

The Trojans entered Friday’s contest versus Tripoli with one thing on their mind — bringing home the win and at least a share of the district title. With Turkey Valley (5-1, 4-0) and the Panthers (5-2, 4-1) both undefeated in district play, it was no surprise to fans on either side of the field that the game was decided in overtime. It was, however, a surprise to many to see the Panthers forced to send in a back-up quarterback to throw a pass that was broken up by the Trojans and taken back for a touchdown and the win, 52-36.
“This was a great high school football game,” said Coach Mark Scott. “Offensively we ran the ball well but struggled throwing the ball. Oliver Schmitt, Carson Bruess and Noah Hanson all ran the ball well. The offensive front of Calvin Bodensteiner, Brady Fischer, Treyton Hulbert, Troy Schmitt and Chase Hayek did a great job of controlling the line of scrimmage. Defensively we had made some adjustments to try and contain the quarterback. Even though we gave up 36 points I thought the defense did great with the game plan.”

Missed opportunities for Vikings against Marion

Tuesday, October 11, 2022 3:45 pm

There were several scoring prospects during Friday’s game for the Decorah football team (2-5, 0-2); however, Marion (3-4, 1-1) prevailed in the final period, 14-13.
“This was another tough game with an ending that could have gone either way,” said Coach Pat Trewin. “The first half ended 0-0, but we know we did not play our best in the first half. Marion kept fighting and made a couple of big plays. They have a couple of players who can score on the big play, and we knew we would have to score, or those big plays could hurt us. Even though they moved the ball on us some, we limited the big plays to just a few. We could not reach the endzone enough with ours. Later in the game we had a couple mistakes that stopped chances to score.”

Fourth quarter hands SW a loss at Bellevue

Tuesday, October 11, 2022 3:43 pm

It all came down to the final period for the South Winn football team (2-5, 2-3) at Bellevue (3-4, 3-3) Friday night, with the Warrior offense getting shut down for the 42-28 district loss.
“We had great success running the ball the entire night as we were able to execute the offensive game plan coming in. We struggled however, to make the plays we needed on third and fourth down defensively,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “We had a couple tough injuries throughout the night, but our kids battled hard and fought through the adversity. In the end we just came up a little bit short and Bellevue made some nice plays on offense down the stretch to put the game away.”

Norton takes week three top prize

Tuesday, October 11, 2022 3:40 pm

Phil Norton of Waukon pulled off the win in week three of the Pigskin Picks football contest after incorrectly guessing just one game.
With two games missed, Allen Goeke, also of Waukon, was just one point away in the first tie-breaker with 59 and claimed runner-up. Mabel-Canton had the most points scored by any one team at 60. Third place went to Waukon’s Paul Norton with two missed games. It took the second tie-breaker guess of 84, for Paul Norton to secure the third-place prize. The game between Rushford-Peterson and Winona Cotter tallied 78 points in the contest.
The two most missed games were Luther defeating Simpson and Waukon besting Dubuque Wahlert.

Warrior girls claim top spot; Vikes runners-up

Friday, October 7, 2022 5:25 pm

The Warriors hosted 11 squads in the meet. In addition to a junior high race, there was one girls race and one boys race.
The Class 1A No. 3 Warrior girls came out on top on the team standings while the boys finished sixth. Decorah took runner-up in both divisions, while Turkey Valley had just three harriers on the course between the two races.

First defeat in UIC for Warriors

Friday, October 7, 2022 5:24 pm

The South Winn volleyball team (9-17, 5-1 UIC) faced off with Clayton Ridge (12-13, 4-1 UIC) in a battle for league standings in the UIC on Tuesday evening in Calmar.
The Warriors came up just shy on the evening dropping a highly contested first set 24-26 with no team having more than a two-point lead. In the second set, the Warriors played their most consistent volleyball of the net jumping out to an early lead and not looking back, winning 25-16. Unfortunately, Clayton Ridge regained the momentum and walked away with the four set victory (21-25, 22-25).

Comets shut down Decorah spikers

Friday, October 7, 2022 5:23 pm

Wrapping up the regular season on the road, the Decorah volleyball team (18-7, 2-3 NEIC) squared off with Charles City (18-8, 3-2 NEIC) Tuesday, dropping the match 3-1. Set scores were 31-33, 25-22, 19-25 and 16-25.
“Honestly, we played very flat all night long, and our communication was not good. We have several things that we need to work on before we go to the NEIC tournament and start the postseason. I believe this team has the ability to bounce back if they work together,” said Coach Gina Holthaus.
