Decorah brings home all golds

Utilizing some swimmers in different events Thursday night, the Decorah girls’ swim and dive team had a strong night in the water at Algona, winning 150 to 44, and brining home gold medals in each event.
Striking gold first was the 200-yard medley relay of Maeley Nefzger, Katerina Kovarik, Julia Alberts and Paige Werner turning in a time of 2:03.54. Werner then turned around and got right back in the water to win the 200-yard freestyle as an individual in 2:10.62. Winning the 200-yard individual medley in 2:41.32 was Grace Stegen. 

No. 5 Denver stops Warriors

The came to an end on Wednesday evening as the South Winn volleyball team fell to No. 5 Denver 0-3 in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals.
Set scores were 12-25, 8-25 and 10-25.
The Warriors end the season 11-19. Denver (34-10) faced Aplington-Parkersburg Monday, Oct. 24, in the regional semifinals. The finals will be played Wednesday, Oct. 26, at a location to be determined.

Eight perfect scores in week 5

It must have been an easier week, or just a lot of lucky guesses, as there were eight perfect entries into the Pigskin Picks football contest for week five. It came down to the tie-breakers for the second week in a row.
Turkey Valley scored the most points of a single team with 69 as the first tie-breaker. In the second tie-breaker the combined score of Turkey Valley and West Central was 105 points and was the difference in the first and second prizes. The top-three individuals all guessed 68 in the first tie-breaker.
Decorah’s Sue Roby came out on top with a second tie-breaker guess of 92. It came down to David Luhman’s guess of 88 that settled him into second, while Dale B. Olson of Decorah had a second tie-breaker guess of 78 to take third.
Of the those missing games, most common ones were Crestwood falling to Osage, Lanesboro over Mabel-Canton and TCU defeating Oklahoma State.

Vikes’s season comes to a close

The season came to an end in the regional semifinals for the Decorah volleyball team as the Vikings fell to Charles City in a close 2-3 battle Thursday in Charles City.
Set scores were 19-25, 25-14, 25-20, 21-25 and 13-15.
Decorah ends the year 19-13, while Charles City (27-12) will face Western Dubuque (23-10) in the finals today, Tuesday, Oct. 26.

Decorah football team ends 2022 season

It isn’t the way any team wants to finish the season, without a playoff berth; however, there was a lot of growth throughout the season for the Decorah football team.
In the final week of the regular season — and the final game for the 2022 Vikes — Decorah (3-6, 0-4) fell to No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock (9-0, 5-0) at home, 32-13.
Decorah finished fifth in the district. Waverly-Shell Rock and Western Dubuque (6-3, 4-1) earned the two playoff spots from District 2, with only the top-two teams in each district advancing to the playoffs.
“Waverly-Shell Rock is an excellent team, deserving of their high ranking. We are very proud of our players for how hard they played, and our defense was excellent. The score was 11-0 part way through the third quarter. We could not generate much offense until late in the game, but we never quit,” said Coach Pat Trewin.

To the max; Vikes pushed to five sets, prevail over MC

The Decorah volleyball team battled Tuesday night, forcing five sets against Mason City in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals.
“Wow, what a match. It would’ve been a great match to watch if you weren’t invested in the outcome,” said Coach Gina Holthaus. “Our kids didn’t quit fighting.”
In the end, it was the Vikings (19-12) that pulled out the victory, defeating the Riverhawks 3-2. Set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 12-25 and 15-12. 

Warriors advance to round two

The season continues for the South Winn volleyball team as the Warriors knocked off Postville Monday night in Class 2A Region 5 first-round action in Calmar.
South Winn improves to 11-18 and faced No. 5 Denver (33-10) Wednesday, Oct. 19 in the regional quarterfinals. The regional semifinals are set for Monday, Oct. 24, at Denver, with the final Wednesday, Oct. 26. Other teams in the bracket are Aplington-Parkersburg (21-17), Central Spring (18-13), No. 9 Grundy Center (29-12), MFL MarMac (9-18), Lake Mills (29-7) and Belmond-Klemme (11-20). Postville ends the season 1-19.

Trojans bow out of the postseason Monday

After winning a share of the Upper Iowa Conference title, the Turkey Valley volleyball team had its hopes of going far in the postseason crushed by Edgewood-Colesburg Monday at home.
Turkey Valley ends the year 17-16. Ed-Co (15-19) moved on to the Class 1A Region 6 quarterfinals Wednesday, Oct. 19, against North Linn (20-10). The regional semifinal will be held Monday, Oct. 24, with the regional final set for Wednesday, Oct. 26.
Set scores were 25-23, 24-26, 11-25 and 23-25.

Wagner earns gold for SW; Warrior girls win UIC

Make it three Upper Iowa Conference titles in row for the South Winn girls’ cross country team as all seven harriers placed in the top 15 to earn all-conference honors Thursday in Luana. With 32 points the Lady Warriors defended their Class 1A No. 3 ranking and dominated the field over North Fayette Valley who was the runner-up with 50 points.
In the boys’ race, the Warriors garnered 77 points, finished fifth in a team race and had one harrier in the top 15. Winning the boys’ title with 57 points was Class 1A No. 10 Clayton Ridge followed by MFL MarMac with 62 points. 

Trojans claim share of UIC crown

In a highly anticipated regular season finale in Calmar, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (17-15, 7-1 UIC) secured a conference championship with the 3-0 win over South Winn (10-18, 6-2 UIC). 
The Warriors finished outright third in the league with a record of 6-2 with their only other loss to Clayton Ridge who splits the title with Turkey Valley.
