There’s a new sport in town
Monday, November 21, 2022 5:10 pm
While girls’ wrestling isn’t exactly a new sport, the 2022-23 season is the first that it is a stand-alone sport sanctioned within the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union — and it’s growing fast.
The Warriors have 11 members on the team, three who have experience to lend a hand to the newcomers. Also, with experience both as a wrestler and an assistant coach is new girls’ head coach Ethan Adams.

It’s going to be a battle for a starting spot on the South Winn wrestling line-up this season.
With over 20 grapplers filling the weight room this winter, the Warriors should yet again have a strong group.
Motivating the athletes to victory is head coach Jake Elsbernd. In his 12th season with the Warriors, he will be assisted by Ethan Adams, Dakota Gray, Kenny Mikota, Jason Schmelzer, Tayton Bullerman and Logan Schnuelle.
State-bound; Five events for Marshalltown Saturday
Monday, November 7, 2022 4:26 pm
The Decorah girls swim and dive team is going back to state with five events. The athletes will take the water Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12, in Marshalltown.
“We are excited with the results from the regional meet. Just like the performance at the conference meet, we had significant time drops by the entire team, which resulted in us placing second overall. Each of our three relays had time drops from the conference meet, with the 200 and 400 free relay qualifying for the state meet. Individually we had 13 races where we dropped time from our conference meet. Overall, an outstanding day by all our swimmers,” said Coach Loran Storts.

Calmar’s Pam Drucker was the final winner of the 2022 Pigskin Picks football contest. Drucker missed two games, as did second and third place; however, by virtue of the first tie-breaker was the closest. Wayne State’s score of 56 was the highest score of any one team and Drucker guessed 62.
Runner-up went to Kevin Cervenka of Fort Atkinson who missed two and guessed the first tie-breaker at 63. Bob Sorenson of Decorah had a first tie-breaker guess of 65.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck ends Trojans’ run in second round
Monday, November 7, 2022 4:21 pm
A few uncharacteristic mistakes, penalties and lost two-point conversions hurt the eight-man Turkey Valley football team on its quest to defeat No. 3 Gladbrook-Reinbeck Friday night in the second round of the playoffs as they came up short, 30-28, at home.
Turkey Valley ends the season 7-2.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck (9-1) is in the quarterfinals Thursday, Nov. 3, at Newell-Fonda (9-1), with the winner moving on to the semifinals at the UNI-Dome.
“This was a tough loss. The players played hard and gave great effort. It was a game of two evenly matched teams but unfortunately we came up short by two points. The only turnover of the entire game came on a fourth down interception late in the game,” said Coach Mark Scott. “The seniors ended a great career on the grid iron with two district titles going undefeated in district play the last two years. Both of the losses in the playoffs the last two seasons were by two points. The hard work that they put in the off season showed on the field all season long. We will miss this group of seniors.”
