Decorah girls claim three victories at tourney

The Decorah girls’ wrestling team fared well in the East vs. West tournament held in Fort Dodge Tuesday night, picking up three wins, a tie and losing just one in dual action.
The Vikings defeated Ridge View 48 to 36, Riverside 60 to 18 and S.W.A.T. 48 to 30. With a score of 42-42, it was a tie with Spencer and the lone loss was to Lewis Central 30-48.
The trio of Kaitlyn Bjork, Ashley Bjork and Naomi Simon went 5-0 for the tournament to lead the Vikings.
Lady Warriors get season under way

It was a pair of close contests that could have gone either way as the South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-1, 1-0 UIC) opened the season this week, falling to North Butler by three points and defeating Clayton Ridge by one.
Vikings take down Waterloo, Dubuque Senior

In the first competition of the season, the Decorah boys’ swim team bested the field in a triangular Tuesday at Waterloo East.
The Vikes defeated Waterloo 125 to 44, as well as beating Dubuque Senior 113 to 55 in varsity action. The junior varsity squad also won 42 to 14 over Waterloo and 42 to 21 over Dubuque Senior.
Decorah won all three relays and came in first in five individual events.
The night started with the 200 medley relay. Isaac Knaack, Mason Cote, Simon Kutz and Dylan Hogan combined to post a gold-medal finish in the event, touching the wall in 1:47.30.
Viking keglers sweep Sumner-Fred

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ bowling teams were in the driver’s seats Tuesday night as they opened their seasons with wins over Sumner-Fredericksburg on the road.
In the girls’ match, the Vikings defeated the Cougars 2,428 to 1,802. Baker game scores were 148, 176, 158, 167 and 115.
Leading the way for Decorah was freshman Karlie Einck with games of 203 and 168. Senior Lily Iverson was also at the top of the field with games of 138 and 200, as was Sydney Hageman (140, 193). Other varsity bowlers for the girls were Hannan Schnitzler (126, 195), Rebecca Bruening (151, 150) and Anika Grinna (157, 136).
TV girls double Hawks

The Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (1-0, 1-0 UIC) exploded into action with a 52-27 win over Kee High (0-1, 0-1 UIC) on the road Tuesday night.
Shots were falling nearly effortless for the Trojans as they opened the season with a 15-4 first quarter lead. The gap opened to 27-12 by halftime and the Trojans never looked back as they held the Hawks to single digits in each of the four stanzas.
Decorah girls fall to top-ranked Wolverines

Kicking off the season against the top-ranked and returning champions in Class 2A, the Class 4A No. 7 Decorah girls’ basketball team (0-1, 0-0 NEIC) fell to Dike-New Hartford (1-0) on the road, 59-49.
After a close 9-7 first quarter, the Wolverines pulled ahead to a 31-19 halftime lead that the Vikings were unable to recover from despite their best efforts to close the gap.
DHS participates in state bowling

Six Decorah High School students traveled to Maple Lanes in Waterloo to participate in the Special Olympics State Bowling Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 21. To qualify, each bowler had to win their division in the Northeast Iowa Regional tournament held in October.
Alberts to compete at Minn. St.

Julia Alberts recently signed her national letter of intent to participate in track and field at Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.
Alberts has been a three-year letter winner at Decorah High School and two-time state qualifier in discuss for the Vikings. During the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Albert was the Northeast Iowa Conference Champion in the discus. In 2022 meet she placed third in Class 3A in the discuss with a throw of over 134 feet which also earned her elite all-state honors for the meet as it was third longest throw in all classes.
Julia is the daughter of Tom Alberts and the late Deb Alberts.
Viking and Warrior women take part in first sanctioned tourney

As the sport of girls’ wrestling has increased in popularity in the last several years, teams from across northeast Iowa invaded Decorah Saturday for the first girls’ tournament of the year since the Iowa High School Girls’ Athletic Union sanctioned the sport.
The host Vikings finished third with 263 points behind Northwood-Kensett’s 307 and Cedar Falls’ 302 points. South Winn tallied 79 points during the event to finished ninth in the field of 14 teams.
Young Warriors looking to grow fast

Some players will get the chance to make a name for themselves as a part of the South Winn varsity basketball team.
With three seniors graduated who played big minutes last year, it will be a work-in-progress for the Warriors during the early portion of the 2022-23 season.
Putting the pieces together will be head coach Derek Taylor, who is in his second year with the program. He is assisted by Mitchell Herold.
