Stille on podium for Decorah at Coralville

The Decorah boys’ wrestling team got in on the action at the Dan Gable Donnybrook tournament in Coralville over the weekend, with one grappler making the podium.
Senior Brady Stille wrestled his way into fourth place at 145 pounds to lead the Vikings.

It was a good outing for the South Winn boys’ wrestling team as it competed in the first tournament of the year at Wapsie Valley. Despite being open at four weight classes, the Warriors secured a fourth-place finish in team standings with 132 points, behind champion Nashua-Plainfield, Wapsie Valley and Anamosa. 
South Winn had good performances throughout the day with three grapplers reaching the finals and crowning two champions. The Warriors also had a trio of wrestlers recover from early losses to finish the day in third.

Local gridders named all-state by INA

Three local football players were recognized by the Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) as all-state selections announced recently.
Honorees from all seven classes were chosen by sports writers from across the state.
Captains this year include Cael Ortmann of Remsen St. Mary’s, 8-man; Patrick Brown III of Grundy Center, Class A; Nolan Delong of Durant, Class 1A; Zach Lutmer of CLGLR, Class 2A; Aidan Hall of Harlan, Class 3A; Braylon Kammrad of Lewis Center, Class 4A; and Abu Sama of Southeast Polk, Class 5A.

Teams battle tested in Jackson Junction

Down to the wire.
Playing fast-paced basketball, the Turkey Valley boys (1-1, 1-0 UIC) outlasted the visiting South Winn Warriors (0-1, 0-1 UIC) Tuesday night in Jackson Junction, 52-51.
Scrambling up and down the court, both teams put up a solid first eight minutes with South Winn leading 13-11. The Trojans went to work in the second period, spearheaded by back-to-back treys by Oliver Schmitt. The treys propelled TV out to a 27-22 halftime lead. Both squads continued to play hard in the third with the Warriors cutting the Trojan lead to one, 36-35. The game came down to the final shot taken by South Winn senior Carson Wenthold that was just shy of the three-point line, which would have tied the game and sent it into overtime. Instead, it was a two-pointer, leaving a sour taste in the Warriors’ mouth at the loss.

Vikes pounds Blackhawks at home

It was an offensive explosion in the second half for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) Tuesday as the Vikes defeated Prairie du Chien (0-1) at home, 71-37.
Decorah struggled early and trailed 12-10 after the first eight minutes. However, things came together in the second, with the Vikings outscoring the visitors 19-9 for a halftime advantage of 29-21. The firepower continued in the third with Decorah going up 47-25 with eight minutes remaining.

Playing halves in place of quarters in Wisconsin rules, the Decorah girls’ basketball team (1-1, 0-0 NEIC) picked up a road win Tuesday over Prairie du Chien, 76-61.
“I was pleased with our performance against a very competitive team,” noted Coach Shannon Quandahl.
The Vikes put together a 40-34 first half lead and extended their advantage in the second half for the victory.

Multiple Viking, Warrior champs crowned

Getting back to action following the Thanksgiving break, the Decorah and South Winn girls’ wrestling teams competed at the Central Scramble Monday night in Elkader, with each team returning home with multiple champions.

SW grapplers split to start year

South Winn’s boys’ wrestling team kicked off the 2022-23 season with one victory and one loss Tuesday night at home.
The Warriors defeated Central Elkader 54-12 but fell to New Hampton/Turkey Valley 54-25.
Four grapplers went 2-0 in the opener including Aiden Feickert, Collin Holm, Kyle Kuboushek and Parker Timp.

Trojan girls fall at New Hampton in non-conference action

After kicking off the season last week with a conference win, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (2-1, 2-0 UIC)  had a tough first half at New Hampton (1-1, 0-0 NEIC) Monday, falling 55-40.
The Trojans were close at the end of the first period, trailing 12-10 before the Chickasaw defense stifled the visitors to pull ahead 25-15 at the break. Despite TV picking up the pace in the second half, New Hampton outscored the Trojans 32-25 to claim the non-conference victory.

A sluggish second half spelled doom for the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team as the Trojans (1-1, 1-0 UIC) fell to New Hampton (1-0, 0-0 NEIC) on the road Monday, 51-44.
The Trojans had a solid first half, keeping pace with the Chickasaws for a 10-10 knot after the opening period and took a 23-17 lead into the locker room at the half. In the third quarter, TV held on to a slim 36-34 advantage despite New Hampton putting down 17 points. The Chickasaws doubled down in the final stanza, outscoring the Trojans 14-8 to clinch the victory.
