Decorah boys fall to CC in NEIC

A second-half offensive attack by Charles City (4-1, 1-0 NEIC) was too much for the Decorah boys’ basketball team (1-3, 0-1 NEIC) as the Vikings fell to the Comets, 62-54, on the road Friday night.
It was a promising first half as Decorah rolled out to a 12-8 lead after the first eight minutes and extended its lead to 25-17 at halftime. However, the Comets closed the gap in the third to 39-37 and pulled away in the final period.

Knaack second in backstroke

Saturday, the Decorah boys swim team competed at the Marcussen Invite, hosted at Cedar Falls.
The Vikings secured 208 points, placing fifth. Waukee won the meet with 471 points.
“Overall, this was a very solid team effort. Four of the top 12 teams in the state, including last year’s State Championship team were at this meet,” said Coach Loran Storts.

The Decorah girls’ and boys’ wrestling teams traveled to New Hampton Thursday night to take on the Chickasaws in a Northeast Iowa Conference dual. The girls defeated the combined New Hampton/Turkey Valley squad 60-6, while the boys fell 42-29.

South Winn girls fall to Crestwood

A slow second half offensively was too much for the South Winn girls’ basketball team (1-4) to overcome Thursday night as the Warriors fell to Crestwood (3-0) at home, 67-40.
The Warriors hung tough with the Cadets in the first quarter but trailed 20-16 after the first eight minutes. South Winn scored 10 points in the second period to trail 37-26 at the half. The Warriors put a strong fight in the third but continued to fall behind to 49-37. Crestwood put the game away in the fourth.

Warrior boys fall to 2-2

The South Winn boys’ basketball team (2-2, 2-1 UIC) dropped a non-conference game to Crestwood (3-0, 0-0 NEIC) Thursday at home, 64-50.
The game was closer than the final score indicated as the Warriors led by three with three minutes to go in the first half. The Cadets finished the second quarter on a 13-3 run to lead 33-26 at halftime. To start the third, South Winn missed two open layups and gave up points on the transition. Crestwood continued to pull away and led 50-37 with eight minutes to play.

Viking girls net victory over Mason City

A solid second half gave the Decorah girls’ basketball game (2-1, 0-0 NEIC) its second win of the season, besting Mason City (1-1) at home Tuesday night, 60-50.
The two squads went toe-to-toe early, before Decorah went on a 10-2 run to finish the first period out front, 16-9. Little by little, Mason City got back into contention, pulling within two near the halfway point of the second quarter, 23-21. By the break, the Vikings had a slight cushion again to lead 29-24. Aiding in Decorah’s first half success was the charity stripe, as the Vikes converted on 7-for-8 free throws.

Warrior grapplers earn dual split

At its home meet Tuesday, the South Winn wrestling team earned a split.
The Warriors began the night with a loss to Fillmore Central-Lanesboro-Mabel-Canton (FCLMC) 42-34 and rebounded to defeat Waukon, 54-24.
In the match with FCLMC, the Warriors picked up six victories. At 145 pounds, Collin Holm picked up bonus points by throwing Bostin Wright in 1:00. Kaden Bullerman defeated Carter Hovland in a 12-2 major decision. Kyle Kuboushek (152), Aiden Feickert (113), Bo Wangsness (120) and John Donovan (126) all received forfeits.

SW boys double up on WC

After a slow start to Tuesday night’s game, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (2-1, 2-1 UIC) lit up the nets to defeat West Central (0-2, 0-2 UIC) on the road, 68-31.
In a tight battle for the lead, the Warriors led 12-11 after the first eight minutes. The second quarter was more Warrior style as the ball fell offensively for South Winn and defense was tight, outscoring the Blue Devils 17-4 to lead 29-15 at halftime. Despite West Central setting the pace in the third period, SW was back at it in the final eight minutes, holding the hosts to six points for the victory.

Trojan girls show balance

Defense and free throws were the story of the night Tuesday in Jackson Junction as the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (4-1, 4-0 UIC) defeated MFL MarMac (3-2, 1-2 UIC) in conference action, 44-38.
The Trojans jumped out front to a 15-8 lead in the first quarter. The Bulldogs worked to erase that advantage but continued to trail 24-18 at halftime. That first-half lead proved to be what Turkey Valley needed as both UIC squads knocked down 20 points in the second half.

South Winn’s Kipp reaches finals

The South Winn girls’ wrestling team made the trip to Waverly Tuesday night and competed with over 200 girls from 18 schools.
Senior Isabelle Kipp reached the finals at 190 pounds and brought home silver. Kipp claimed three falls en route to the final match. In round one, Kipp threw Jenna Small of Center Point-Urbana in 1:07 to advance to the quarterfinals against West Fork’s Fernanda Remirez. There the Warrior pinned her opponent in 1:56. It took the whole first period for Kipp to turn Leah Stewart of Charles City, picking up the fall at the 2:00 mark. In the finals, the senior fell to Independence’s Rachel Eddy in 46 seconds.
